Description

NGC 6643 is an 11th magnitude spiral galaxy appearing in the constellation of Draco. It has a very small nucleus separated from the broken remnants of an inner ring that extends into a complex, irregular spiral pattern. Bright knots that are probably H-II regions outline the multiple spiral arms.  There is also a bright blue star cloud visible in the lower left region of the galaxy in this image, reminiscent of NGC 206 in the Andromeda Galaxy.

NGC 6643 appears roughly 3.5 x 1.8 arcminutes in size, corresponding to a physical diameter of 65,000 light years at its calculated distance of ~70Mly.
